  • A humble burg at nearly 25 years, bought back in 09 from PC (before they became a criminal outfit) for the ridiculous tariff of $20. This one was buried at the back of the box. A cold rainy night with some left over vegetable korma seemed as good of an occasion as any to pull the cork. This is intact but would have been better when BO was still in office (as would everything). Pretty Gevrey nose of black cherry, cracked pepper, subtle brett, and some wild mushrooms. In the mouth this shows most bright cherry fruit and licorice. Acid is very nice and there is a lacy and delicate Volnayish texture. Finish is medium. I do dig this and there is no denying the special feeling one gets with drinking old burgs. No regrets here. At this point I am down to my last half dozen or so 90s burgs so I savor each one. This one needs to be drunk post haste if anyone is still holding.

  • Another nice showing by a 95. I think the vintage really is coming into a prime drinking window as the acidity on the 1er cru wines seems to be easing off, allowing us to enjoy the rich lush fruit of the vintage. First experience with the producer. We let the wine breathe for about an hour in the bottle. Very nice concentration both on the nose and on the palate. Black fruits (blackberries and dark cherries) and smoked red meat dominate the palate. Very lush and sweet upfront, this starts very big and promissing. Unfortunately the finish is not nearly as exciting, just a bit flat and lacking some complexity, but that's about the only knock on the wine. This is lipsmacking delicious and the bottle disappeared very quickly. An absolute bargain at the $29 closeout price.

  • Light ruby core with garnet rim. On the nose, a marked volatility is present, with sauerkraut and salt-and-vinegar potato chips being immediately noticeable. Still displaying some fruit characteristics, with rhubarb and dried cranberry being discernable, a somewhat herbal streak of rosemary, copper, and classic aged Burgundy notes of earth, mushrooms, something remniscent of the smell of a dank root cellar, and finally a hint of charcoal. On the palate, this is still drinking well, although the volatility on the nose is present on the palate. The fruit is drying out, with rhubarb and cranberry being most obvious, with notes of bell pepper, rosemary, thyme, charcoal and a sort of minerality. Chalky texture; somewhat sharp acidity. Tannins are well integrated and settling into a nice juiciness, and finish is quite long. Unique and interesting; not perfect but has a rustic charm all its own. Drinking nicely now, and seems to have the stuffing to go ~4 years more.

  • Solid burgundy for $29. A little rustic perhaps, but the red and black cherry fruit is energetic and bright. This comes off as a very young bottle, I'd never guess it's 16 years old. The finish definitely lingers, no harm in drinking up now but there's clearly no rush.
