Seeing Paolo Vergnano in New York was an unexpected pleasure, having visited Cascina Gilli this past summer. Their Malvasia is an absolute pleasure, a guilty pleasure indeed, fruit salad, cotton candy, with a slight raspberry effervescence. Ripe and sweet, it has an underlying herbal structure and a refreshing citrus note. Delicious!

Indigena Tasting with Ian D'Agata in Houston. Made with Malvasia di Schierano and Malvasia Nera Lunga. Clear, bright, medium (+) ruby with a delicate mousse. The nose is clean, with intense aromas of red cherries, wild strawberries, red roses, fresh herbs and moscato-like spices. The palate is sweet, with medium (+) acidity, medium (-) tannins and low alcohol (5.5%). This is an intensely-flavored, creamy palate, with a long, tart finish. Drink now, not intended for aging.

The nose was zesty, showing sweet spices and herbs, pear, melon, and crushed cherry. It was incredibly fresh and wonderfully sweet on the palate with great energy and a hint of fizz--like the best fruit salad you’ve ever had. It finished fresh, lingering on ripe cherries, strawberries and hints of spice.

Indigena World Tour Day 1: Monferrato (Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria, NYC): [Served chilled. Only 5.5% alcohol. Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco is a DOC wine produced in Asti from the Malvasia di Schierano grape with the optional addition of up to 15% Freisa. However, this one is 100% Malvasia di Schierano.] A refreshing end to the day. A lovely, frizzante red wine. Sweet, fruity nose. Appealing. Sweet but balanced. Similar to a Brachetto, but thicker in the mouth.
