Under screwcap. Golden colour. Honey, toast, kerosine and mandarin. Rich flavoured with some spice and acid lifting things up. Has developed well under screwcap.

NobleRottersSydney - Oz riesling 2000 & older (Guillaume at Bennelong): {13%, screwcap} Needs to be given to anyone who reckons wines won’t evolve properly under screwcap. Similar lemon.gold colour to most of the other wines tonight; toasty developed Eden riesling aromas, spritzy apple fruit on the palate with a tiny touch of botrytis/apricot. Quite weighty, yet fresh & clean, with an even palate and medium length finish. In retrospect 97 was better in Eden than Clare, but this must be well into its drinking window and I’d be hesitant about holding it many years more.

Under screwcap, this wine was a mid yellow colour. If the last wine was a ballet dancer, this was a front row footballer. Heavy aldehydic nose redolent of kerosene led to a palate not without some freshness, but a generally thick oily texture. It’s not unattractive, but seems to have aged before its time (along with most of the 97 vintage Rieslings from Eden and especially Clare valleys, it seems). It has some honed flavours, with no hint at all of oxidation (as I’d expect after 6 years under a screwcap), but definitely has more appeal to those familiar with aged Riesling, rather than being a crowd-pleaser of a wine.
