  • Almost three years later, this was taken from the cellar to accompany roast pork. It's now a full amber colour, though there hasn't been much change in the nose over that time. Ripe exotic fruit, honey and mango are still there, with more than a hint of botrytis. Again, this has auslese weight, concentration, richness and length. Today, the acid is not merely adequate as it was then - it's playing a bigger role today to balance the very ripe fruit, never permitting it to become cloying. Finishing on the dry side, now. This is very enjoyable with appropriate food and is very good plus. Should see its 20th in similar shape.

  • Day 2, with just a glass left in the bottle: Full yellow with gold and amber hints. Ripe exotic fruit and honey nose, but showing a little botrytis, which it didn't do on the first day. A suggestion of bees' wax and dried grass, with time. Auslese weight and richness. Long, caressing and very concentrated. Sufficient apricot-like acid. Looking back to a TN I made early in 2016, the wine hasn't developed much since. Very good plus in the context of a single glass, maybe even two, but this is a Scharzhofberg on steroids - muscle-bound and lacking dexterity.

  • Tartaric crystals on cork, Color is darker gold than expected. Chamomile and yellow honeysuckle flowers soar out of glass. Expressive big Base notes, orange marmalade, chopped reduced white apple flesh, fresh mango and hints of cinnamon. Palate shows Auslesen level juice, Concentration, long and rich with creamy golden fruits of orange/mango. Could use a bit more acidity but, theres enough to make it work. Not much minerality. Full throttle fruit, Enjoyed on its own 45-55. Purchased from distributor as direct import and stored accordingly. Drink over the next 10 years. This showed much better with more balance after a 3 hour airing in the fridge… Na zdrowie

  • The wine looks yellow gold colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like grapefruit, diesel, honeysuckle and some flowery blossom. It tastes like grapefruit, pineapple? and diesel. The body is light/medium. The wine has silky texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity. I drank this with a red onion/fennel tarte tatin which has a sweet caramel , when tasting the wine the acidity came to the fore which was nice.

  • Honey in color with a nose of sweetened apricots. Good body. Sweetness strikes first with not enough acidity to balance it out. Finish is just more cloying sweetness; overpowering. Disappointing effort.

Rockss and Fruit

(Reichsgraf Von Kesselstat Scharzhofberger Spatlese) From one of the most revered vineyards in all of the Saar. Tropical and chalky with lovely deep-pitched aromas of apricot, peach skin and tangelo. There is a lovely purity to the nose. The palate is rich with tropical fruit and some lovely inner mouth floral aromas and spice. Almost like a Saar gumdrop. Lovely with years ago. Great wine but acidity is a bit low for me.
