  • Past it's prime. A bit dull. Decanting to see what a bit of time will draw out. Interesting note: the cork is marked Ryan Cray Winery 2000.

  • Wow. Strong nose of currant and cranberry wafting from the glass while I was waiting for it to open up. Finally couldn't resist after an hour and was rewarded with several dimensions of flavor from red/black fruits to spice and hints of vanilla. Continued to evolve over the course of several hours as we left the last 1/3 of the bottle in the decanter and went to a concert for 3 hours. This wine really held up well, and still plenty of texture and backbone to last several years. Most memorable bottle we've tasted in the past 6mos at least. Too bad I don't have any more, would have loved to try again in 2-3 years. Great job Mark!

  • I enjoyed this quite a bit. Still a young plum and cherry colour with only a tinge of brick on the rim. Nose smells more mature with plum, cherry and currant fruit as well as some earthy, woody, herbal notes. Palate is nice and sweet, well balanced by currant and cherry fruit, good acidity and soft dry tannins. Doesn't have a tonne of complexity but savoury and delicious. Probably will keep my remaining bottle till 2009.

  • This is my oldest Mark Ryan wine in the cellar and only another remains. 2688 bottles of this 57% Cab, 33% Merlot, and 10% Cab Franc blend were made, and it checks in at a modest 13.9% alcohol by today's standards. I really want to like this wine more than I do, in part, because I've been sitting on it for awhile. The color is still very youthful with nary a hint of bricking. TThe nose is a heavy dose of blackberry jam with hints of band-aid, buttered corn, and cedar. There is a penetrating mouthful of fairly rich fruit accompanied by lively acid and zest, a solid dollop of oak, and grippy tannns (still). This finish is a bit abrupt with some medicinal drying at the ennd. All in all, however, the separate components are quite nice, suggesting a well made wine. The color is vibrant, the nose beguiling once the band-aid note blows off, the fruit is explosive (though not as deep and long as I prefer), and the finish, while not an asset, is only a modest flaw. Nevertheless, there is a disjointedness, an overall lack of harmony and communion between the parts, that makes the sum less that what it could be. Perhaps the wine is just in an awkward phase (I haven't had this vintage enough to know), but it just doesn't have that something special that marks an outstanding bottle.

  • Brian & Tess: Rich, smooth, elegant; dark ripe cassis and blkberry notes; some cedar, forest notes; well-made, med. t’s, classic claret--very good. But overshadowed by the chili paste and potstickers.
