When writing a paper, I always try to find one awesome source and then, from the sources used in that paper, I have a nice road-map to several other excellent sources. One-stop shopping! Guess what? The same principle works with wine. Find a top-shelf wine (some examples that come to mind are D'arenberg, Penfolds, Latour) and then research what their most inexpensive offering is. Chances are if they make top-flight wine, they don't do a poor job of anything and that includes their more affordable offerings. Such is the case with the " La Vieille Ferme" made by the fine folks who produce the stellar " Chateau de Beaucastel" in the Rhone Valley of France.
This wine is a quad blend of grenache, syrah, mourvedre and cinsault (yummy) and is grown high on the slopes of Mount Ventoux. At a the recession friendly price of 13.97, you can't go wrong with this one. Understated jammy fruits on the nose, lots of oak, spice and tart fruits on the palate. Finishes quickly but hey, it can't do it all for under 14 dollars. I always look for a few inexpensive wines to have on hand so that when someone pops by real quick and I just want to open "something" - the recoltre will now be added to the list along with Skalli's Corberies and Torino's Organic Cuma line.
Happy Easter Everyone!

Wild Rockets @ Mt Emily (Wild Rockets): A grenache syrah blend. This has sweet violets on the nose. Pleasant, standard, no-suprises rhone blend. This has a rounded palate and does suprisingly do better with the green curry cod rather than the shepard's pie.

Boring. Recorked and will use it for cooking. In its defense, it was buried in the cellar and should have been consumed years ago.

Nothing offensive, nothing special. Better on the second day. Fruit was a bit weak for this California boy's palate.
