Community Tasting Notes (1) Avg Score: 85 points

  • Tasting due to the generosity of my daughter who shared this bottle from her birth year with us. Opened and poured immediately into ISO tasting glasses, the cork was solid at the top, but a little crumbly where it had been in contact with the wine. There was a noticeable brownness around the edges and we held our breath when taking the first sip. Luckily, we were pleasantly surprised. There was a reasonable amount of light berry fruit on both the nose and palate and it was evident that this was low alcohol (12%), the taste being smooth, and the finish fairly short. But it had survived and we thought improved with 20 minutes exposure to the air. Overall, a real surprise that this wine remained drinkable. Not a classic, but lovely for us and my daughter to find a reasonable '79 from what was a generally poor vintage across most of the northern hemisphere.
