  • This took a while to open up. Initially a bit astringent and closed. Once it opened up, however, it's more what I expected from prior vintages of this wine. Good stuff.

  • This wine is drinking perfectly right now.

A floral, dried dark cherry, dried blackberries, and cocoa nose. A bit lighter bodied than most Easton zins, dry, with medium high acidity. Palate is in a nice spot between fresh and juicy fruits, and a dried fruits. Red cherries, bramble, and a bit of strawberry on the palate. Medium-heavy chewy tannins with a earth, mineral, cocoa, and a tiny bit of leather. Medium-long mineral and dried fruit driven finish.

An absolutely fantastic zin. The only thing bad I can say about it is the nose is a bit muted. Much better than the 2005 vintage that I consumed several months ago.

  • A good zin. Balanced, though the flavors are lighter and more subtle than other Easton Fiddletown zins I've had. The aroma is particularly light. On the palate it has a nice medium high acidity, which gives it a nice mouthfeel now, and points to continued aging potential.

  • Appearance: deep ruby, tad bit of bricking at edges, tiny bit of very fine sediment, very light staining, heavy tearing.

Nose: clean, medium+ intensity, developing, blackberry, ripe strawberry, black plum, grapefruit peel, dusty earth, savory herbs, dried rose petal, brown sugar, clove, worn leather, soy sauce, black fig.

Palate: dry, medium acid, medium tannin, high alcohol (14.5%), medium+ body, medium+ intensity, medium finish, blackberry, ripe strawberry, black plum, grapefruit peel, dusty earth, savory herbs, dried rose petal, brown sugar, clove, worn leather, soy sauce, black fig.

Overall: This is a somewhat nuanced style of zinfandel; there is ripe fruit, but it is not overripe and pruney. Due to the age, there is also a good amount of savory tertiary development. The oak is not intrusive, and structurally the wine feels rather well balanced. I'm not sure it has the flavor intensity, finish, nor acidic structure for long aging, so my best guess would be to drink in the next couple of years while there is still sufficient fruit. A unique wine!
