  • Still great! Especially on PnP, though after a few days it starts to oxidize.

  • wow, just excellent! wasn't sure what to expect from this 2010 but it held up very nicely! the nose and the palate were completely different, with a fairly strong nose with earthy hints and then a very smooth start and finish. highly recommend!

  • Had Stalin chosen to be a winemaker instead of a brutal dictator, I am sure he would have made a wine much like this. Before dismissing it based on that statement, read on.
There is nothing refined or subtle here. Maybe that is what makes it intriguing. The blend is mostly Negroamaro with a small percentage of Malvasia. It has a powerful nose, with blue fruit under leather and tobacco that become more prominent as the wine is exposed. The tannins are muted, probably as the producer held this for a decade before releasing it. It opens with black current or boysenberry and a good bit of acidity. Baking spices enter mid-palate. There is an unmistakable cigar tobacco on the finish, which creeps forward if you hold a glass to taste the next day.
This is a wine that calls for food. I would recommend pasta with a meaty tomato sauce. A spicy Italian sausage with marinara would be good, or Sicilian food. I opened it with a Chicago-style deep dish sausage pizza that paired very nicely.

  • Medium garnet (almost tawny), this bargain from the heel of Italy opens with a full and fruity bouquet. Mouth-filling and juicy, it abounds with black fruit, sweet prunes, leather, pencil lead, and cloves. The medium-length finish starts at first with a silky hint of tannins that erupts into somewhat plusher astringency highlighting tobacco and a wisp of smoke.

  • This is what old-world Italian is all about. Funk, earth, a little leather, and some roses as well, medium-light body (in a good way), really versatile with food. Loved it.
