Rather lean structured. Clear red fruit, some red meat, very present acidity. Very straightforward, but still a little racy. The individual components need a little more time for more harmony. 93+

First - highly anticipated - encounter with this Super Tuscan (50/50 Sangiovese/Merlot) from esteemed Mazzei - bold, brimming, brilliant. Dark & deeply concentrated red/ruby in appearance. Deep & intense nose featuring dark fruit - cherries, blackberries - wafts of smoke, juniper, graphite, dried herbs, violets. Palate is full-bodied, rich with chewy tannic structure, multi-layered with a lovely bitter touch from blood orange, the clenching tannic backdrop lifting the fruit-driven finish. Terrific drinkability.

Very youthful and a bit awkward on the nose. Fruit a bit diffuse, lacking definition at present. Heady; sweetly fruited on the front palate, a totally different take to the 2016. Good weight again. Nice texture and tannins here. A little more drying/raw than the previous vintage. Maybe just needs time.
