Dull red color. A mixed ledger on this one, mostly positive. In its favor, smoky black cherry fruit mixed with soil, citrus and excellent acidity, and largely resolved tannins. The debit side-a bit too much green for such a ripe year (harvested too early?) and an astringently woody finish that reminds you of Bouchard's proclivity to use too much oak in many wines during this time period. Very enjoyable if not perfect, and it is another data point suggesting that many 2005's are turning the corner toward real maturity.

Decanted 3 hours. Dark fruit well balanced some tertiary development. Drank with pinot noir tasting old vs new world and against Giroud LC grand cru same vintage and almost same quality. In a really good spot now to drink.

Translucent, light ruby color. Sweet dark cherry, hint of mint, leather, cinnamon on nose at first, transitioning to a complex combo of boysenberry, pomegranate, heme, currant, and that bit of mint. Quite lovely and evolving nose. Nicely balanced structure from the get-go. After an hour or so, straightforward, subtly sweet palate of plum, bing cherry, light-five-spice with a bit of sweet heat and bitterness on the finish. Prime drinking window.

(Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes) Dark red violet color; lovely, rich, dried cherry and roses nose; delicious, layered dried cherry, red fruit palate; medium-plus finish 93+ pts.
(Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay Clos des Chênes) From 0.85 hectares of owned vines. A much more mineral nose than the Caillerets though underpinned with some supple, high-quality black-skinned cherry notes. Ripe, sweet fruit on the palate but balanced by excellent acidity. There’s more tannin here than the Caillerets - velvet rather than silk. Long lasting in the finish - yet another very fine wine.
