This vintage seems much more brooding than either the 2017 or 2018. There’s not as much delineation of the various elements and things seem a little muddled, at least at this stage. If I had more in the cellar, I’d be inclined to hold for another two years by which point this may have sorted itself out a bit more.

Big nose of coffee, chocolate, leather, blackberry. Really nice. Pretty big palate, coffee and chocolate the dominant notes with supportive dark chocolate raspberry/blackberry with some graham cracker. Tannins could smooth more but they are pretty supple. I also picked up a bit of a transient sour note that detracts. The slightest bit of heat on the back end. Quite a dark fruited cab. Pretty good wine but doesn’t wow me.

60 minute decant. Nose of bright purple fruits, violets, black licorice, metallic notes, and hints of saffron. Full-bodied palate of black cherry and blue fruit is firm and structured with layers of earth and volcanic soil. Firm tannins and a touch of sourness on the finish with dark fruit and lots of chewy oak and cherry wood flavors. Drinkable now but a little more time in the bottle would help.

Purchased a Paint of Moonlight vertical in BD 14 so opened this one from last year to see how it’s doing. And I would say “awesome”. this has classic Cab flavors like dark red fruit and mocha/chocolate, and what I especially appreciate about this wine is the texture and long smooth tannins.

No sediment. Dark purple. Some reduction initially, then luscious blackberry juice. Nicely balanced. Fully ready to drink.
