I haven't had the greatest luck with Monchhof, starting with an '07 Kabinett that displayed fair riesling character but lacked any sort of personality, leaving me with a flabby finish short on acid. Same goes here with this '02 Spatlese. While it smells and tastes like riesling, I'm surprised at how bland this is. After almost 11 years in the bottle and another two hours in my glass, the Monchhof is so primary and simple without a hint of development and complexity that I may start calling this estate the Veuve Clicquot of the Mosel. The beautiful, promising, light gold color contradicts all other aspects of the wine. I'm not sad but I am disappointed.

(Monchhof Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese) Classic UW aromas of slate, minerals, apples and even cassis. Incredibe texture and purity with layers and gobs of fruit. Exceptionally ripe and delineated.

White fruit (peach, citrus, apple), nice floral, slight petrol. Good acidity. Lingering finish. Really enjoyable.

Always a killer bottle of wine that still is young.
