Lovely lifted medium bodied Hunter at full maturity. Cherry nose. Palate is smooth, drying tannin, lovely earthy leather saddle notes. Mine is the old parchment yellow label but same wine I think. A delight to drink.

{cork, 13.7%} Just a dash of Mudgee cabernet to add to the Hunter shiraz here. Dark crimson in colour; clear but not exactly bright. The aromas are of dark berries & plums, with liquorice and damp soil. It’s not overtly fruity (at least not by recent South Australian standards), although it’s still a long way from developing any serious secondary notes. The palate is round and smooth, very nicely balanced with all parts of the tongue evenly coated; yes, this is the way it should be. Oak influence is minimal; just a component, not a feature of the flavours. Tannins are fine and sandy. The earthy component of the fruit on the palate is dry and savoury; there’s quite perceptible acidity that makes its prickly presence felt, but it’s in line with the medium-bodied weight of the wine and moderate length finish. The Mudgee cabernet only constitutes some 8% of the wine, but I suspect adds a significant structural component. For $23 from the mailing list 3 years ago, this is a pretty good wine.
