The 2001 Sottimano Barbaresco Cottá has aged beautifully thus far and its structure is entirely intact. A complex array of dried red fruit, black licorice, leather, raisins, clove and earth soar from the glass in an aromatic bouquet that continues to evolve with air. There's tremendous mid-palate depth and length. Drinking so well right now!

Brick red. Fruitcake, banana bread and flowers on the nose. Subtle medium berry fruit on the mid palate with truffles, porcini and earth. Graphite near the end with solid tannins.

Open 4 hrs, decanted for 1 hr, this was still firm and tannic, some nice deep cherry notes but even at the end of the bottle firmer woody tannins started showing themselves. Large enough fruit to last but it will take a long time for the tannins to resolve.

Decanted and poured, this showed similarly to a bottle tasted in March of 2009; however, on this occasion the wine seems more complete with better detail on the palate and bouquet. The components are here for this to show even better. Perhaps a a couple of more years of bottle age or a longer decanting time will bring out the best in this wine.
