  • Tasted the newly-released 2017 vintage today at the Alit tasting room.

Intriguing nose had many different facets to it.

On one hand, there was fresh raspberry, blackberry and black cherry fruit. At the same time, there was a deep base note of chocolate and bacon fat. Then, I could dig up a certain savory note - tomato leaf and stewed vegetables. Finally, the earthy side came out. All in all, very nice aromatics, but I did detect something along the lines of oxidation or something that may have gone wrong in the ferment. I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

Upon sipping, my suspicion was confirmed. The wine lacked a certain vivaciousness to it. It came across a little flat and felt a little processed or manipulated. Not the bright pure freshness that I have come to associate with the label. I don't know, maybe it's the youth of the wine and this might work its way out with a little bottle age, I'm not sure. As of right now, a little bit of a let-down.

Definitely a more savory and mineral driven wine than fruity. If you like that style, you'll still like this wine.
