Decanted and let it breath for about an hour before dinner. On opening it had some funkiness that almost smelled corked and tasted sour cherries. I had some hope based on Burgundy Al’s note. The funk did blow off, it was still high toned after an hour, the sour cherry bitterness softened. It paired well with the steak and salmon. After two hours it started to unwind more and deliciousness factor went up and the wine disappeared quickly. It needs time to unwind but it didn’t have much tannins so I wouldn’t sit on these too much longer.

Lots of black cherry with roasted meat and very good concentration, but still showing the assertive 2005 vintage firmness. I'd suggest holding until at least 2025, or even better, 2030.

Dark brooding cherries on the nose. The palette is still quite closed a think, more cherries, strawberries, but with a fair bit of tannin closing things out. A delicious wine, could do with another 5 years I think.

An absolute brick of a wine. Even after two hours, gives nothing on either the nose or on the palate. Either this is a very bad wine or it needs another decade.

Manchester Wine Society Red Burgundy (Withington Golf Club): a more conventional nose. lots of attractive elements but they are a little subdued and have to be coaxed out of the glass. the palate is excellent, better than the besancenot, really silky smooth. i think this is a little shut down right now and would like to taste again in a year or two.
