ItalyvsFrance Merlot blends Zoom tasting. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of cool stony minerality, light black pepper, black cherry, dark plums, blackberry, light earth. Developing. On the palate, dry, juicy high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.5%), grippy high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of blackberries, black cherries, some cracked black pepper, savoury olive + earth, oak background. Long finish. Good quality. Good structure. Some Syrah in the mix to give this some pepper and backbone.

Deep ruby, almost black at the core. Rather muted nose at first but open up after an hour or so in the glass to reveal notes of dark forest berries, some licorice, and a spicy tone reminiscent of cardamom (?). Medium to full bodied attack, smooth but very present tannins, fine fruit on the middle palate: blackberries and blueberries with a hint of licorice. The dry tannins - a bit on the woody side - kicks in at the end. Fine acidity, medium length. A charming wine lacking any excitement, but fine with food (we had it with lamb in a tomato sauce, and the acidity tackled the tomatoes nicely). I'm a bit unsure on the cellar capacity of this wine, but anyone daring to try may get a pleasant surprise. It evolves very positive in the glass, and the last sip is really a combination of generous fruit and fine acidity and dryness. May deserve a higher score in a couple of years

Random wines tried before service (Oinoscent): This is a blend of 55% Merlot, 20% Petit Verdot, 15% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes were treated separately and then blended in 500lt tonneaux. The wine is earthy, bloody, with ripe red currant and cherry in both the nose and palate, sweet vanilla/oak notes, nutty, 14.50% alcohol heat, medium tannins and finish

Deep purple color, almost black at the core. Very young appearance. Blackberry/blueberry fruit at the first sniff, while underneath there is a nice mineral streak combined with nuts and some spice (not sure what type...). Medium to full bodied, sweet blackberry fruit attack on the palate, fine grained tannins, fruit through the whole tasting curve. The aftertaste is smooth, with fine acidity and a bit alcoholic warmth. Long. An extremely pleasant wine to drink now, preferable with some steaks or deer, but will surely open more up and provide even more pleasure in five years.
