  • A muscular Pinot, perhaps too young still. Ripe, warming purple fruit with spice hints on the finish.

  • Decanted for approximately 90 minutes then poured back into the bottle and consumed on day 1 and day 3 out of a Sensory stem. Approximately 6 ounces was left at the end of the night and it was stored in a Eurocave Wine Bar 2.0 and finished on day 3. The wine was best on day 3.

The color was a dark ruby purple. Day 1, the wine was a blend between a full bodied pinot noir and a lighter syrah. There was red and black fruits and a little barnyard funk on the nose. The palate was of darker red, blue and slightly black fruits. There was umami flavors that were unexpected and more similar to a Syrah with brown spice notes and some minerality. I did not enjoy this wine as much on day 1 as I did on day 3.

Day 3, displayed beautiful dark cherry, blueberry and some hints of blackberry. There was streaks of allspice and salinity. The acidity was medium(+). There was no signs of umami and it did not resemble a Syrah like it did on day 1. The wine was much more enjoyable on day 3. I think this bottle is best served sitting in your cellar for a few more years before popping a cork. It should become more balanced in another couple of years.

My score is 92-94. On day 1 it was closer to 90/91 but was a beautiful wine on day 3.

  • Been a huge Dehlinger fan since the mid 80s, and have had every vintage of the Renatus ('14 through '18) and this is the first one to disappoint. Could have just been this bottle or it just needs more time...or it's just me.
This bottle lacked the Pinot typicity we prefer (Mrs. Ozziewine LOVES Dehlinger and didn't care for this) and had more of a dusty musty essence to it, like a Syrah or lighter Cab...didn't pick up any fruit.
Gave it three hours of air and that does round out the edges.
I have one bottle remaining and plan on cellaring for another three years minimum.
To be clear, it is a good wine today, but you need to adjust your expectations of a traditional Pinot experience.

  • Nice and smooth with a pinch of spice; Enjoyed it a lot.

  • Dehlinger's 2018 Renatus bottling is a deep ruby Pinot that is immediately effusive of blackberries, blueberries, morello cherries, baking spices and cocoa on both the nose and palate. Considering the varietal, it is relatively full-bodied, freshly acidic, seamlessly alcoholic (14.5%) and judiciously oaked. At this early stage the tannins are plentiful but velvety in texture. Layered and dense on the mid-palate, it proceeds to a lengthy smooth finish. This is already drinking beautifully, but the structure is also in place for it to reach its fifteenth birthday with grace. Drink now-2030.
