Full body, deep garnet Red. High tannins and dry. Aromas of Black cherry, chocolate and leather. Opened bottle an hour before dinner. Needed more time to open up. After sitting in the glass another hour the wine really blossomed and burst open with more fruit and the tannins smoothed out. Paired with bacon wrapped filet, grilled broccoli and a Dilled creamy potatoes. The bacon wrapped filet softened the tannins. The grilled broccoli brought out the fruit. All around great wine pairing and very good wine from Hall in the sub $100 price.

This was kept open overnight, and has benefitted from the additional air. In this vintage, the Eighteen-Seventy-Three is pretty stellar, and is certainly close if not equal to the quality of this winery's wines selling for two to three times as much. I rated a previous bottle of this wine 94, and I'd say the score should remain the same or even tick up a point. The nose suggests rich mountain fruit, while the palate is smooth and silky, yet quite full and delicious with nice mocha overtones. The real bonus here is that this was FREE, being provided by Hall for my long tenure as a wine club member. (To my mind, this is one of the better wine clubs out there; it is pricey, but you get a lot of bang for your [admittedly big] buck.) The nice thing about Hall is you get a lot of Cab that you don't have to wait ten plus years to enjoy--not that those wines are not fun too. The downside is these are so darn tasty, I have no idea how they will age, cuz I drink 'em all too soon. Oh well, you takes the good with the bad....

Plenty of fruit and tannin left, in balance. Currant, vanilla, coffee. Good grip. Dry finish.
