  • perfect mid-neck level and long elastic cork, colour near opaque black cherry red with only slightest brown tinge at rim, quite youthful, nose fine but quite jammy, green vegetal hints typical of northern Medoc, no great depth or complexity, palate with quite mouth-puckeringly dry and prominent tannin, quite austere, not much fruit, rather straightforward, OK but not very moreish, a northern Medoc from a not particularly generous year, not a great advertisement for Potensac, can do better

  • Third and final bottle from a lot bought at auction. The fill was well into the neck, and the cork was soaked only a few millimeters. Clearly the best bottle of the lot. On the austere side of things, to be sure, but not thin, overly acidic, and dropping fruit as the other two bottles were.

This was well balanced, showing undergrowth and strong brambly red over black fruit and leather on the nose and palate. Better on the pretty nose than the jagged, tannic palate, which dragged it down. Call it an 85 palate and a 89 nose.

I’d wager this bottle was in the twilight of its peak years. It needed to be at room temperature to strut its stuff. The second glass was quite a bit better than the first, but I suspect this had more to do with the dry extract building up on the palate—making the wine seem more even and deep—than it did with any magical transformation the wine was undergoing. (As a rule, I don’t think air really has that kind of transformative effect on wine. It has an effect all right, but this kind of change is more a measure of how the taster is changing not the wine.) 13% ABV. (good; average/**/15/87)

  • From a 750ml bottle bought at auction. Not much bricking and just a little tertiary development. Showing red over black fruits, pencil shavings, and toast on the nose. Better on the nose than the very drying, thin palate. Better than the last bottle from this lot, but Jancis Robinson was right—not a Potensac you have to have (even if you are big fan of the estate like I am). At cellar temps it was a positively dumb, downright steely thing. Drink it at room temperature to catch what bouquet and fruit lurk there. It might almost pass as charming then if it weren’t for the very fine but very unripe tannins. Might be better with a New York Strip steak. 13% ABV (good; low average/**/14/85)

  • 3 year after my previous bottle and consistenly performing. We drank over 3 days, best on day 2 and best with food. Fresh, good fruit and present, slightly drying tannins. Outperformed a 2006 haut bages liberal, that we drank before.
