Ruby colored, light medium bodied, balanced and polished, black berry and cherry fruits are accented by notes of tar and black tea, hints of white pepper, smoke and menthol with soft but gripping tannins on the finish.
Beautiful, elegant Nebbiolo. Normally I have no problem with drinking wines super young- I'd say this was genuinely too young to really feel "complete", but I loved what it showed, despite being extremely shy, compact, and somewhat aggressively structured at this stage. A LOT of improvement to come- I feel like this will eventually be a solid 94 or even 95 on my scale, but it's just not there yet.
Nose was so pretty on night 1- faint but gorgeous perfume of super-pure red cherry and almost "sweet" floral tones, airy, like a field of pink flowers. Tiny little nuances of leather, smoky tones far beneath. Palate was very coarse, chalky tannins but the ripeness was super pleasant, tons more red cherry, very sappy and viscous even with the bright, fresh feel.
Day 2 showed an interesting evolution- the smoky, leathery, almost tarry notes on the nose were really accentuated. Still some red fruit, but it was striking how much it had changed. Not much letup on the tannins, but some really beautiful cooling minty tones to go along with the cherry and florals.
Can't even imagine how beautiful this will be with 10 years on it. There's incredible purity of fruit, interesting complexity lurking, and tons of energy and structure.
I'm really happy to say that on night one this was one of my most successful blind tastings. I knew nothing about the wine beyond the approximate price and the bottle shape (ruling out some grapes, but still many possible answers!) My first guess was Barbaresco, 2017, 14.0% ABV- bingo! When given the first letter of the producer I guessed that too!! It felt so genuinely and clearly like a Nebbiolo, but I impressed myself with guessing Barbaresco in particular- felt too elegant and "airy" to be a Barolo, but too structured to be an alpine Nebbiolo.
