  • Disappointing when first opened - unbalanced vanilla from the oak and the fruit/acidity balance was poor.
However, when tasted next day it was much, much better. Good colour, attractive fruit and complexity on the nose. The palate showed deep and dark black fruits, with a good balance of acidity. Mocha coffee flavours emerged on day 2 with just a hint of fennel/liquorice. Good on its own and very good with food - closer to the standard I expect from Catena Zapata for everyday Malbec.
The back label says ‘drink within 3 years’. This is total rubbish - ignore it. The wine will continue to improve.
Scored on the basis of the second day tasting and the good QPR (under £10 on offer).
Note. Another unnecessarily heavy, wasteful bottle.
