  • I still have a general preference for syrahs from other parts of CA rather than the sonoma coast, and this wasn't much of an exception, though I did like it. Hard to put my finger on it - this one is full of taste, but it's taste anchored in the earth rather than taste anchored in fruit. Both styles seem to have ample spice and pepper, and this wine was no exception, but it's too sauvage for me to love.

Note: It also took this bottle about 4 hours to fully open, rather than the one hour that it was allotted!

Tasted March 24, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. Dark purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Big but not overpowering nose of bacon fat, smoke and blueberries. Flavors of blueberries, sweet cherries and teeny tiny bits of mocha served over an earthy frame. Sorry to see this go. My last bottle. Should hold for at least five more years, hopefully becoming a completely smooth and seductive Syrah. Recommended.

  • Tasted November 23, 2003 at home with a dinner of Braised Beef with Mustard and Marscapone Sauce (should be Lamb but the butcher was out) from a recipe provided by the newsletter from Peay Vineyards. Purchased direct from the winery for $45.00 a 750ml bottle. 14.6% alcohol by volume. Opened and decanted for 1-½ hours prior to serving in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. The color of this wine is dark purple but clear as far as you can see. The nose is very nice, starting with an earthiness that is quickly followed by dark fruits, cassis, blackberries and plums. Secondary aromas consist of leather and roasted meat, finally ending with a hint of pepper, mint and cigar box. The tannins are velvety, but a bit drying, likely due to the youth of this wine. Acid is fresh and balanced, coupled well with the medium fruit and perfectly in sync alcohol. Overall this is a very well balanced wine. Nice effort. Flavors are not quite as exciting as the nose promises, mostly relegated to the earthiness up front, followed my some plums, black cherries and just a hint of allspice on the finish. Body is ample to full with a velvety to rich consistency throughout. Good solid structure here, just short of layered and harmonious. This wine should start to shine with some short term cellaring. Drink now with 1-2 hours decanting. Probably best between 2 and 5 years from now. 90-91 points. I would consider this a very agreeable value.
