Understand that this wine is past its prime. Decanted for 30 minutes, still a good nose after that time. Soft and velvety, a lovely companion for bbq. Saying goodnight to a good soldier in my cellar.

The trademark character and taste profile of this wine is the oak tones infused into the wine from aging in oak barrels. Even after several hours of having tasted this wine, that predominant oak flavor still lingers in my mouth and even on my breath, like the taste of a fine cigar. This was dark garnet colored, medium to full bodied with complex berry fruit flavors that had been overtaken by the layer of oak, with hints of dill notes attributable to the oak and not the fruit. Firm but smooth tannins lingered on the long finish.

Lot's of power, fruit and staying power still in this 27 year old. Still indigo in color. Full bodied, ripe raisin and currant on the palate with a smoky finish. As one would expect from Silver Oak, there was a ton of oak left on the finish...too much for my liking but certainly an expected signature. Served side by side with an '89 Diamond Creek Lake Vineyard at the rehearsal dinner for son Matt and his bride Molly, both born in the same year as the wine. Two excellent wines with very different styles.

Followed some of the previous recommendations and let it open up for about 2 hours. Then actually filtered the wine to get out the sediment. Even though this wine is said to be past it's prime it was delicious. Deep fruit notes, hint of vanilla with light tannins and a long finish. If I could find another bottle I would buy it for sure.
