  • Fitting of the seasonal symbolism on Easter Sunday, I thought it clever to try this Argentinian wine born of a concrete egg! Zorzal's Eggo Franco, which instead of being aged in an oak barrel as per tradition, is placed in a large concrete egg. Apparently the sacred geometry of this shape creates natural convection currents that keep the wine in a slow and constant motion, all while maintaining its natural integrity and wildly fresh aromatics. This one really caught me off guard. 100% cabernet franc, and it really feels so true to the grape, so holistic and fresh... like the entire vine from root and soil to stem and fruit is captured at its finest angle.

The nose is extraordinarily fresh with briny black olive, vanilla cupcake, dried flowers, tomato leaf and wet forest floor moss coming on strong. It's only slightly more mild on the palate, which hosts underripe raspberry, green bell pepper pyrazines, blackcurrant and red plum laying on a matte foundation of leather and chalk. A medium body and firm acids lend themselves to gently grippy tannins that lead to a lengthy and bright finish. This really is a beautiful, curious, unique and lush selection.

  • I wasn't sure what to expect as I rarely drink pure Cabernet Francs, but I was pleasantly surprised. Compared to my usual Bordeaux preference, this is lighter bodied, more acidic, more astringent, less deep tannins, more refreshing and fresh.

Currant, dark berries, not much minerality, maybe a hint of green apples? It's not my usual style as I prefer Bordeaux, Malbec, Riojas...basically medium to full bodied, tannic wines. Or Oregon Pinot Noirs, which this resembles more in body, freshness, and a bit in personality. Not as juicy or fruity or delicate, but as light and acidic and bright.

Interesting try. I liked it, close to loved it, but not quite as I'm not sure it's my style.

After a few more glasses, I've decided it isn't my style of wine. I can appreciate the quality but it's peppery and spicy with acidity, the combination of which doesn't give me the silky poilshed Bordeaux vibes or the rustic earthy grippy tannins of Riojas and Malbecs. Interesting to have tried, but not something I crave.
