  • I have purchased this wine in most years, mostly because I like the neighborhood it grows up in. As others have noted, it usually isn’t one of the highlights of the portfolio. I am trying to remember to drink these wines young, as I have found that many Mike Smith cabs go into early hibernation.
This wine was readily approachable with a splash decant and a vigorous swirl (think college chemistry lab). Darker fruits- cassis and luxardo cherries, nice touches of oak, minerals and spice. Balanced with nice density. Not as heavy or alcohol dominant as some MS wines in their youth.
It had a short finish, that my wife described as “funky” and she sent me back to the wine cellar for “something better”. - normally I would add a major point deduction, based on such a request, but I enjoyed it, probably more than previous vintages

  • excellent, well balanced, Better than a 2116 beckstoffer I recently had. Some posters insist on drinking Mike Smith wines early. True in this case

  • Rich and velvety wine. Complex nose of anise, granite, and cinnamon, followed with Chambord and luxardo cherries.

Creamy, full body with taste is creamy, vanilla, and red velvet cake. It reads a little heavy at this early stage. Not quite the purity of fruit or 'zip' to go higher, but exceptionally easy to drink.
