  • The '17 Grinzane Cavour is enjoyable, but seems fairly rustic and I think should be consumed in the near to medium term.

On the nose, I found black cherry, sweet spices / balsamic / touch of VA, licorice, and bitter orange peel. The aromatics are rustic / a touch funky, and the profile is nice, but seemingly a bit advanced for such a young wine. On the palate, I found the wine to be medium to light in body, with sweet spices, licorice, and dried black cherry. The tannins are fairly minimal and the wine drinks with ease, but there's a bit of a graininess to what tannin is there.

  • Sunday hangout (Chicago, IL): Slightly funky nose, clearly of a relatively natty disposition, but still well within mainstream (especially since I can only imagine how terrible natty nebbiolo could be). Slightly high-toned, but without too much volatility; quite earthy and not as fruit-forward on the palate, showing tons of tannin. An interesting wine now, and my guess is not one for aging too much, as it doesn't seem to have the fruit for really long-haul aging.
