  • 40th anniversary tasting (L'Esprit du Vin - Axelborg): My notes from this fantastic gigantic tasting are in general extremely short (because of the many wines) but with ratings. We spent a whole day tasting and tasting quality wines.

This wine: An impressive Mosel-house. I scored almost all the cuvees 90 and above and many of them in the mid-1990s. This cuvee is off dry with notes of kerosene.

  • Excellent entry-level Gutswein from a top producer with all attributes that make dry Riesling so unique: petrole, lemon, pineapple, peach, yellow plum, bright delicate acidity, mineraliry, purity and cutting finish. Slight effervescence.

  • Luce e vento.
    Schloss.
Formerly “Monopol”, the Schloss Riesling Trocken is designed to be a “very true expression of the Grünhaus style”. Indeed, as far as Gutswein goes, this is a pretty electric example, offering up lovely clear crisp apple and slate sensations with fine herb aromas.
    Delicately pungent (petillant).
Incredibly salty with great nerve and acidity. Elegant and precise and just 11.5% ABV (half a degree below 2018 and 2019). Aged in a combination of stainless steel and large traditional fuders. Lovely.

    Screwcap.

    NB:
On the left bank of the Ruwer river, the lands of the von Schubert estate have been producing wines since Roman times. Farmed as three separate vineyards, Abstberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg since the 10th Century when an order of Benedictine monks owned the land until the 18th Century. The present owner, Dr Carl von Schubert’s family bought the land in the 19th Century and has worked the vineyard since.

The Schloss Riesling Trocken is designed to be a “very true expression of the Grünhaus style”.The 2020 Schloss Riesling, is made from grapes across the three vineyards, vines are farmed without pesticides or herbicides and are all harvested by hand.

  • This is the former "Monopol" Riesling, which was renamed to "Schloss" in 2020. It still is made from grapes grown at their VDP Große Lage vineyards Abtsberg, Bruderberg and Herrenberg.

Typical Mosel nose and a delicate palate with lemon, slate, mirabelle, red currant and a hint of caramel. Lovely and well paired to salad with halloumi and figs.
