Medium ruby. Aromas of red plum, dark cherry, earth, clove, cinnamon, and a discrete note of vanilla. On the palate a strong acid tannin structure supporting delicious sweet fresh red fruit, medium to high alcohol (14.2%), very long finish. An utter engaging wine.

Sure, I love Burgundy and now dearly priced Northern Rhône gems, but the wallet and wine fridge only allow for so many of those treats, dear reader. So on a blustery, raw evening what do we have to accompany a hearty dish of Poulet au Vinaigre? Turns out some young Bandol just crying out for a tasting note. From what I understand Domaine de la Tour du Bon is the most Mediterranean of the Mediterranean locales for Bandol (read warm). But they are great farmers and make a gutsy, rather than overtly polished example. The nose is effusive with aromas of dried violets, road tar, plum skin, and and enough leather to clad Rob Halford. And this is certainly bold, with sweet black and blue fruits framed by firm—though ripe—tannins, brisk acidity and a veritable fistful of garrigue. This has sensational energy and a dynamic core of firm earthiness. Fabulous with the poulet now, but 3-5 years and beyond of cellaring will be amply rewarded. This is a cracking bottle and makes me contemplate whether six or a dozen are sufficient for cellaring.

Wine Wizards Monthly Tasting (Wine Wizards Stockton): Bandol band aid, classic style and nice now, but Brett is fickle and I think this will turn on you. Proceed with caution.
