  • Opened at dinner with friends. No decant, but we should have. A monster wine. Very extracted, rich ripe fruit, maybe a little on the porty side for me. Alcohol felt out of balance. Improved dramatically with air time.

  • Part of blind tasting of 3 bottles with myself, @Ian Leath @Shine J., and two of the lovely ladies.
The VHR ‘19 was bottle #1, bottle #2 was Brion Oakville ‘16, Bottle #3 was Memento Mori VHR ‘19

This finished #1 for 2 outta 5 people (it was my 1st). Huge concentration of dark fruit, flowery notes, roasted marshmallows, chocolate pudding with slight earth. Full bodied to the core. Close call between Brion Oakville ‘16. Cheers

  • We had a 2019 VHR horizontal tasting last night at Lucio’s in Houston, with Arrow & Branch, Keplinger, Memento Mori and of course VHR. CT’r MJP was in attendance, our resident VHR expert, who has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to anything VHR. What a lineup and what a night!

MM showed well early on, very approachable with distinct, fruit forward notes that glided across the palate. The MM was well balanced and smooth, showcasing gapes from blocks 4 & 7. Definitely a premium wine with an ultra-silky mouth feel, this wine doesn’t disappoint.

The consensus takeaway of the night was the pleasant approachability of the 2019 vintage, combined with the exceptional and consistent quality of the fruit. Simply put, the 2019 vintage is a tremendously good vintage for Napa. If you have more than a few bottles of any of these great VHR wines I would not hesitate to pop the cork as all four wines were a joy to taste among friends.

  • TXRDW/Lucio's Houston.

Rob was a very generous host and brought some incredible wines to the table from the 2019 vintage. All wines sourced from Vine Hill Ranch.

    VHR

    Keplinger

    Arrow & Branch

    Memento Mori

This wine showed well but just did not have the same energy of Helen & Francoise wine. Lovely fruit just missing the same verve.

  • Part of a good wine weekend while relaxing at home. Friday night was MM VHR vs FM's Sleeping Lady (both 2019). Saturday, we decided to test out a 2018 Quilceda Creek versus a 2018 M. Etain.

For Friday, both these wines were double decanted about ~3 hours from drinking. I stole a sip of both at PnP. The Fait Main came off a bit harsh, like it needed to settle down. The MM was fully resolved, offering nice dark red fruits, mainly black cherry. MM did throw off a little sediment.

Over the course of the next few hours both wines continued to evolve. Both my fiance and I preferred the MM at the end of the night. Really enjoy what Sam has done with this site and makes me a continued buyer of MM. The FM was no slouch, and it makes me super excited to taste those Kinsman Eades Anjea's when they come in November. The FM came off more dark purple/black - blackberry, some blueberry, and chocolate. Keeping my rating of that at 95 similar to my notes from tasting it in Napa with Nikita.
