Loire valley (and a little Champagne); 9/14/2023-9/22/2023: From open 75cl at Taille aux Loups tasting room, Montlouis-sur-Loire. Clear raspberry fruit with oak scent; entry spoiled by retronasal volatile esters; dry, tannic mid-palate; finish is furry and pleasant. 13,5% alc., €28/75cl at cellar door. 86P

Lay & Wheeler Summer tasting: A big nose- something of Bordeaux about it - lots of saturation, a bit vegetal. An incense note, scorched earth, crunchy cranberry and dark cherry. An interesting bunch of aromas even if they don't scream Bourgueil. A touch disappointing on the palate: less of the richness and silkiness you may expect, just a bit middling.

Nose: Thick dark fruit, black currents and blackberry, loamy soil, autumn leaves, and complex earth. Palate: Rich blackberries, and tart blueberries, tart raspberries emerge over time; a beautiful combination of grippy tannins and acid.

Loire whites and reds: 13.5% AbV; all Cab Franc from 70+ y.o. vines, 20% new barrels
dark red colour in the glass with medium-plus body and bit of cloudiness. in the nose a lot of barnyard funk that took a while to subside but never completely blew away… yet allowed for some red and black fruits to poke thru. these come across more clearly in the mouth while held in check by moderate acidity and a substantial tannic core that needs more time to integrate.
not sure if this specific bottle was particularly funky or all the wine is like that… all the same, i do see some upside potential with some good aeration and more bottle age.
