Two Chardonnays at Pravda Restaurant (Wellington, NZ): One glass. I was glad to see this wine on the menu as Nick had just today asked me for my view on it. Wilco, the current Dry River chief winemaker is doing some good things, there, so I was not surprised that this Chardonnay had received good reviews. Trying it, I agreed those reviews are justified … Under Diam closure. The darker coloured of the two wines. A richer bouquet of pears, baking spices, almond paste, peaches, yellow apples and gentle white flowers. A richer and fuller attack than the Boneline. Pears, nectarines and some peaches, blanched almonds, lemon curd and only a touch of pineapple tropical fruit. Precise acidity focusses the fleshy Chardonnay fruit. Balanced. More concentrated and complex than the Boneline. A Chardonnay in the top tier of NZ Chardonnays. Ideally, hold until 2023, then drink over the next 10 years or so. 93+.
