  • Somewhat lighter red, the 2005 Nicolet Rasteau has a color one might expect of a wine that is 70% grenache and the rest syrah and carignan showing just a whisper of oxidation. This had been resting in the cave for nearly two years and seemed a bit sleepy with a very quiet nose of minimal fruit, high alcohol and not much more. Once the wine warmed the dark fruits appeared showing no pruniness but also absent was any indication of tertiary aromas. Pretty straightforward wine here that may become flatter with age but I'm hoping I can will this into a better wine leaving the last bottle in the cave to rest two to three more years. I drank the first of these out of the bottle on the way to a Giants (baseball) game and I think I enjoyed it more then than I did yesterday. This just may be that type of wine.

  • Did not take notes on this one. This was consumed about a week ago. Remember it being much better than the first bottle. Although the first bottle I had last year was very good. This was really hitting on all cylinders the other night. Top notch CdR. Beautiful fruit, but lots of complexity for a wine in this price range. Very impressive!

  • I am very happy with where this wine is right now. Given some time to open up, there is black fruit and black licorice on the nose, more of the same on the palate, with sweet tobacco leaf and mocha on slightly tannic finish. Mouthfeel is nice with a medium body and just a bit of puckering from the tannins. This is spot on right now and I wish I had a bunch of it.

  • Dark, dark purple. Blackberry and plenty of scorched earth. Fairly intense, with an herbal finish. Not as good as the 2004, but in the same league with the better CdR's. Would have scored higher if the finish was a bit less bitter.

  • Medium deep ruby. Red current, pencil led or tar and a touch of pepper (maybe green pepper) on the nose. Flavors of red current and dark current, dark cherries and pepper. Rustic and a little rough hewn but penetrating and nicely dry. Nice lingering finish. Deep full on grenache.
