Community Tasting Notes (3)

  • Sherry Tasting. pours cloudy almost amber. Very yeasty funky nose. Crazy flavor, iodine and ocean and moss. Too yeasty on the finish but super super interesting. Maybe too old?

  • Bottle been open for over a month.

A: Pale cloudy tawny(en Rama so not fined hence cloudy, The style was created about 15 years ago by Gonzalez Byass)
N: Pronounced nose of acetaldehyde, dried yellow and green apple, sourbread dough, lemon peel, almond,, saline
P: Dry, low acid, low alcohol, pronounced intensity of acetaldehyde, bruised yellow apple, dried yellow apple, chamomile, dried green apple, sourdough, lemon peel, almond and LOTS of SALINE, medium (+) finish, medium (-) body
If I had to blind taste this:
The acetylaldehyde dominance and the saline appearance here makes this a manzanilla.
C: Beautiful balance of dried fruit and nuts with a pleasant sourness and alcohol level to make the mouth water despite the low acid. Its well balanced. The finish is very good, the intensity is ideal on the palate. The wine is presenting with more complexity than I recall in previous visits to the bottle. That saline is very typical of Manzanilla as its made on the coast around Sanluca de Barrameda.

  • D5 DipWSET FORTIFIED WINES - home prep: Pale brown and cloudy
Medium (+) nose of roasted almond, LEMONY SALINITY, bruised yellow apple, acetaldehyde and sourdough bread starter
Dry, low acidity, low alcohol, medium (-) body, medium flavor intensity and medium finish

The wine lacks balance and feels watery here. The acid is low but the dryness and alcohol should give a refreshing nature to balance against the concentration of flavors. The length and flavor intensity combine to offer a little to the quality of the wine that has a little complexity but lacks fully defined flavors. Its a good quality wine but in my opinion, it is passed its best and rather tired. The same could be said of myself this Sunday evening. LOL!

The younger fino wins the race.
