4th Saturday Group: Uptown Brown Bag (V&M's): Double blind. Light garnet color- appears to have some age. Aromas of sawdust, red berry fruit and roasted meat. A bit acidic, with noticeable tannin and flavors of red berry fruit and spice. Finishes with good length. Given the color, acid and tannin, I figured this had to be sangiovese and guessed BdM. (J&T)

I got the opportunity to taste this wine once more a week later. This time the bottle was opened 4 hours before dinner. It was much more accessible right now and clearly showing much more of its great qualities. The overall profile is very much in line with my previous note. But more open and accessible now. Hence the notch up. This is a great Brunello from one of the best vintages of the last two decades. Give it time and you will be rewarded with a great wine!

Initially quite muted. It needed at least an hour to open up a little.
Medium-light ruby color. Still somewhat tight aromas of cherry, some leather, garam massala and red liquorice. With some whirls in the glass a floral hint comes perming through. Full bodied with silky-dusty mouth coating tannins, lively fresh acidity and some fresh fruit. The finish is very long and has a slight bitter twist to it.
This wine is likely entering a sleeper phase already. It is still rather young and has lots of structure to further develop. For now I would rather take the 2015, this 2016 riserva is better left in the cellar for at least some 5 years, and it will have a long life ahead after that. Drink 2026 - 2036.
My current rating is probably 2-3 points below the true potential of this wine due to the tight-wounded character it has today.
