Community Tasting Notes (2) Avg Score: 91.3 points

  • The four best Syrahs from Valais side by side. All from the 2019 vintage. All wines were complex and well balanced, showing once again that Syrah is the red grape best suited to the hot climate of Valais. The winner was the Mercier (94pts), which stands out for its softness and airiness, a superb purity and a wonderful florality. The Germanier Cayas (92pts) has a lot of depth, but is what I would call "cellar-heavy" and therefore less typical. The Maye (91pts) and Joris (92pts) need more time and should surpass the Cayas with time. They were the most Northern Rhone like, both reminiscent of Jamet with that touch of farmyard funk.

TN: Expressive and intense right out of the gate. Lots of earthy minerality, smoke and some dried herbs, spices as well as fresh minty notes wrapped around a dark red fruit and with time more dark fruit core. A bit masculine structure with velvety tannins, some edges, good acidity backbone and a fine texture. Good length. 92pts.

Decanting: Not decanted, followed over three hours. No decanting needed.
