  • This seems to have all the structure and not so much of the charm as the more expensive Joguet wines. Somehow it improved over the course of a few days, whereas it began as one of the least enjoyable bottles I've had in some time, closer to a hostile Aglianico than Franc. I'll hang onto the others for a few more years since this certainly isn't going to come apart any time soon.

  • Although I can respect and appreciate the representative 'purity' of the varietal in these wines, I am starting to shy away from French wines altogether, as I don't really enjoy them nearly as much as their Cali counterparts...or for that matter, the likes of the many offerings from Spain or Italy (see my preceding notes on the Bolgheri, consumed just prior). Aromatically, French wines are tough to beat; though ironically, that was this wine's weakness - chock full of barnyard manure. The texture was notable and the freshness apparent but bottom-line, I'm not drinking and buying wines based on how they FEEL. I want to drink wines with a marked level of hedonistic pleasure. In fact, I'm going to hereby declare the end to my buying French; perhaps with the exception of my as-of-yet to be fulfilled desire to explore the wines of Cotes Rotie.

  • Left in fridge a little too long, opened a little too cool; confectioner's powdered sugar, green leaf, wet stone nose; initial attack on palate is grape, almost a grape now-and-later candy; very front-oriented in weight on the pallate, nothing really conclusive on the back end (temperature perhaps?); an overall muddy sensation vis a vis flavor and weight
Drinking with decent beef stew from Whole Foods, meal is not bracingly spicy in any fashion.
15 minutes: Still front & angular on the palate; still overwhelmingly grapey, now almost metallic; the wine somewhat appears to be shrinking, not expanding w/ heat & oxygen; still very angular and plastic
