  • Lovely elegant expression. Light nose with some mushroom and forest floor. Palate is rather mature, red fruited and bright, with hint of cranberry on the finish with is rather crisp and light. Fine tannins. Lovely wine. Seems to fade quickly with air so may surprisingly be past peak.

  • 8 years since the last bottle, this was every bit as charming as I remembered it being. If anything, it has developed a bit more, showing a softer, rounder character and a little more nuanced complexity. The nose showed aromas of meat and earth and sous bois funk shading notes of blueberries and mulberries, and then a drift of sweet violets at the edges that came out more and more with time. The palate had a lovely brightness to it, with fresh acidity and a chew of fine, round tannins racing through ripe flavours of blueberries and sweet morello cherrries. There was a nice sense of fullness and strength to the wine from the attack and across the midpalate. The finish was quite attractive too, with a little blush of spice lingering quite nicely on the backpalate. It was not perfect - the finish did have a little stalky dryness at its very edges, but otherwise, this was a really pleasant Volnay 1er Cru that showed off the strength of the 2005 vintage very nicely.

  • Dinner at Summer Pavilion (Summer Pavilion, Ritz Carlton, Singapore): This had a pretty nose of perfumed florals, dark cherries and deeper blueberry notes, and then a little traces of earth, spice and ferrous mineral. A pretty nose. With time, some sous bois funk came out as well. The palate was mid-weighted, but very nicely shaped, with a refined structure of fine-boned tannins and soft but present acidity framing clear flavours of dark cherries and berries leading into a decent finish dusted with mineral and spice. Surprisingly for a 2005, this felt like it came from a lighter vintage, but there was otherwise a lovely clarity and definition to it. A fine, rather subtle showing, with the palate showing a bit more reserved than the nose. Nice though, drinking decently well, with quite a bit of upside yet. This will be nicer in 3-4 years.

  • Pungent sweat, funky yet floral perfume. Bitter dark raspberries, bitter red fruit, tea leaves, very fresh, lively fruitiness and balanced acidity. Long lush finish.

  • Cooling-Off Day, Pre-Show Dinner (The Cathay Restaurant): Very nice indeed. This was a lovely marriage of good terroir with a superb vintage, It started with a super perfumy nose that could hardly be anything other than a Volnay or a Chambolle, what with its rich wafts of flowers weaving their way through some funky, slightly barnyardy notes before opening up into earth and spice notes with a whole raft of sweet morello cherry aromas behind them. Just lovely. The palate was very fresh and lively, with lots of tingly acidity lending the wine an almost nervous energy as it raced through the mouth with pure, vibrant flavours of red cherries and fragrant flowers. I thought it was surprisingly opened for a 2005 even considering the fact that it had been popped several hours before serving. The finish was nice too, laced as it was with stony minerality that added a good bit of complexity to the otherwise still primary flavours. This has everything that I like about the 2005 vintage, with pure fruit, good tensile strength, firm but fine tannins and a lovely bright balance to its depth of fruit. A really nice, classically proportioned Burgundy that should age well. Yum.
