  • I remember earlier vintages of this wine being considerably less ripe and extracted, but this is a little much. Can’t really get much of the varietal signature here, nor the gripping acidity and energetic rusticity I look for in Lagrein. Might be climate, might be marketing, but either way, not my jam, though definitely somebody’s jam.

    Edited: thanks to Eightyblocker, I saved the second half of this for night three, and it was indeed better. Still not my jam, but drinkable and less over the top than on night one for sure, while still fresh enough to enjoy.

  • This really needs time to open up. On day 1, it was overbearing, even hours after opening. Day 2 though, it was a different wine, and much to my liking! Black cherry, violets, black pepper.
