Community Tasting Notes (3)

  • I consumed this bottle with bpj87 over the course of an evening, and my impressions echo his entirely. From the decanter, the wine smelled of leather, cedar, smoke, and some earthy funk, under all of which were perceptible notes of sour cherries and red fruit. A nice fruity palate quickly gave way to an unfortunately enduring finish of pure, unadulterated coins. Actually, scratch that. These coins were far from unadulterated; these were the types of coins that had changed hands tens of thousands of times, coins of different denominations and different currencies, coins from different times and different places. For a brief period several hours later, the coins faded to sour cherries set amidst whiffs of smoke with a bit of gaminess. And six hours after opening, the nose magically transformed to cinnamon and apple strudel. Unfortunately, the coins returned shortly thereafter, putting an end to a fun evening following the evolution of this wine.

  • Everything I want from the nose of a mature Bordeaux. Everything I want from the palate of a mature Bordeaux. But then comes the enduring finish: pure coins! Old, well-used pennies, nickels, quarters, and dimes. Even a few dollar coins. The metallic, public metal handrail flavors just refuse to subside!

  • There is always a slight sense of mourning when an older bottle is put to the sword. I often have to battle strong resistance to preserve it for eternity, which would certainly then guarantee its eventual undrinkability. Even here I was a bit concerned, for this was scarcely Chateau Mouton. The color was a fine brick red with a hint of brown about the rim. Although the cork crumbled under my gentle urging to remove it, the liquid was quite clear (although a massive amount of sediment was present at the end). The aroma was very cedary and cigar-box, hints of garrigue. At first there was a sharpness, but the fruit emerged in a short time and was very ripe and full, a sharp berry quality. I was struck by the funky spicy accents that incredibly reminded me of our White Rose Pinots.
