  • Dinner with the TCWC guys (Osteria Langhe, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is highly perfumed, layered, and glass filling with red cherries, licorice, earth tones, dried roses, violets, raspberries, and truffles. There is loads of depth and refinement with an enveloping quality as well.

Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity and medium+ tannins. The tannins and acidity are slightly drying while the feel is silky with red cherries, earth tones, dried roses, mushrooms, raspberries, and some violets.

Overall: The nose on this was monumental, but the palate was a little dried out. Still, this was a memorable wine that was just singing from the word go.

  • Dinner at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL): This is a bottle showing extremely well for its age. If served blind, I would definitely have guessed 20 years younger. The palate shows a fair amount of fruit, and it's also driven by it, although there are also some of the requisite earth and floral tones here. This is a Barolo driven by its fruit before that was even a thing.

  • Drunk over dinner with friends, no TN.
Opened the bottle at noon and decanted one hour before dinner.
Interesting and evolved nose, with tertiary aromas and still fruit, all well knit together. Very nice.
The palate was quite fresh, in fact acidity-dominated, I would say. Still intense, flavourwise, but lacking in body. The finish showed some astringency.
Interesting drink all in all, but I think this was past its prime.

  • This is one of the best Barolo's I have tasted. Despite being 36 years old the wine was a deep red with no signs of oxidation. The bouquet was pronounced -- floral and fruity. After decanting and letting the wine sit for about one hour the wine was deeply fruity with minimal tannin. The mouth feel was exquisite and the classic Barolo "zing" was clearly present. A great wine in its prime.
