  • The deep purple, muscular 2005 Chateau Mazeris has closed up a bit like all of the really excellent 2005s. But don't let the immediate absence of lush fruit fool you. Made from grapes grown from the clay-calcareous soil that's typical of this appellation, which sits just a few kilometers from St. Emilion. Pierre Paillardon, the Savant of Bordeaux, explained to us that Mazeris was lush and fruit forward in the first six months after bottling. The purple/red fruit lushness incrementally went into hiding, so while the wine is delicious now (particularly with winter fare), this is a vintage where the patient buyers will reap great rewards.

Deep purple color to the edge. Fine purple and red fruit aromas with plenty of cut. Slightly closed from the early days of primary fruit opulence. Fine, slick approach on the palate with excellent intensity and subtle layers of purple and red fruit. It is like a nice shag.

Sweet pipe tobacco, perfumey, lots of fresh berries, some flowers and a little cough sweets. Lots of eucalyptus and cherries with some sweet, sticky balsamic elements at the end of the nose.

The palate is initially, quite soft, pleasant fruit with dark spice and a lot of leathery elements. It has some attractive spicy elements, a nice, clean finish, if a bit short. Excellent structure and balance, and has benefited from almost a decade of graceful aging. Drink now with winter fare (great with meats, stews and cheese), but make sure to set a few bottles aside for 2012 and beyond.
