  • Decanted and served. Splendid orange color; after 30 minutes, expressive nose with smoky mushrooms a hint of truffle; mouth is silk and very pleasant, just a bit of acidity and tanins remaining. Fully mature, drink.

  • Blind Tasting 1986-96 Joguet Chinons and Cali Cab Francs (Tom's House, Palo Alto, CA): Second lightest color, moderate bricking. Pretty nose of soy, dried flowers and a tinge of bell pepper. Light bodied with medium acidity. Cranberry, dried flowers, baking spices, leather and a touch of green. The flavors are lifted by the wonderful acidity and there's great intensity and length despite the light body. This is a revelation. (my 1st, group's 1st in a landslide)

  • Medium-light garnet with orange hues. Very refined and elegant with etheral aromas of herbs, red fruits, spices and cedar. Light-medium bodied with silky tannins and balancing acidity. Very harmonious and elegant. Long aftertaste. This was tasted alongside the 1990 Ferraton Hermitage la Cuvee des Miaux. The 2 wines were extreme opposites: the Hermitage was powerful and complex but not as elegant and harmonious as the Chinon, while the latter lacked the sheer power and concentration of the former but was overall far more balanced and elegant. I scored both wines 91, since they were equally enjoyable, each in its own right.

  • Medium garnet colour. Nose in perfect maturity, aromas of sweet spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, tobacco leaves, light touches of cedar and hints of mint, Cabernet vegetality and old red fruit. Palate is lean but perfectly balanced, rounded and has great finesse and considerable length. This is a lighter version of a top mature Bordeaux. This wine can be overpowered if judged together with more powerful wines which is a pitty since it plays on elegance and complexity. Excellent, mature can keep for a few years but I doubt it will get any better.
