  • Champagne In My Backyard (My House): February 2022 disgorgement. This is from the same source that the bottle from a few weeks ago. I pulled it so we could again assess it, especially given the smart palates I had around the table. Creamy impression, a grapefruit-like acid here, seemingly more overtly tangy than the 2012-2014 vintages. Juicy. Tangy (what Bruce called under-ripe strawberry, which is accurate to me), along with peach and stone fruit. I saved (or maybe more accurately no one wanted it!) the leftovers, sending 4 ozs home with Brian to try again, as well as me to retry again tonight to get what I hope is a final, clearer picture of this vintage of Emotion...I finished the last glass tonight. My conclusion is that there is a distinct pink grapefruit impact from this vintage, and it sits in the core of the wine. Around that core is the expected strawberry, orange creme, and some zingy raspberry in this vintage, which seems to accentuate the pink grapefruit quality. Perhaps we have become accustomed to the balance of 2012 - 2014, and so some of us are struggling with the aspect of 2015 where the acid and red fruit feels sharp, even disjointed. Maybe in time this will balance out, I guess we will see.

  • Something new & something familiar (FMIII backyard): February 2022 disgorgement. Underripe strawberry, quite a lot of acid, does not have the fullness/depth of fruit flavor one expects from the Émotion. Finish was a short for this price point, especially compared to the excellent 2012, 2013 and 2014. Same notes as the one tried 3 weeks ago.

  • Champagne at FMIII's: -- 40% Chardonnay, 60% Pinot Noir --
    -- February 2022 disgorgement --

Pleasant (to me) green note on the Nose – tomato vine. Chalky, with high acidity, and light strawberry on the palate --- this was mostly acid on Day 1, with not much flavor, despite looking hard for some. Revisited with a small pour on Day 2: Nose was extremely quiet, and the green note was gone. Acidity still front and center on Day 2, and I’m going to co-sign Frank’s pink grapefruit call here --- spot on. Better on the palate on Day 2, but this is still somewhat vexing. I *want* to believe this has the material to flesh-out with age, but – honestly – I’m not sensing it. Assuming this bottle was representative, best to Hold if you have some in the cellar, as there’s just not much going on with it right now.

  • Double Fisted Champagne at Frank's: Checking Recent Buys AND Something Drinking Great Now (Frank Murray's Casa): Very green nose with asparagus and strawberry. Sweet and rich on the palate. Then it kinda falls off. There's acid but it doesn't seemed married to the fruit. Very notable showing given the reputation of the vintage. You'd think Vilmart might still get a note of that greenness but this seems to have gotten away from him.

  • Vilmart--Emotion and Coeur de Cuvee (select vintages), the meal anchored by Astrid (My House In The South OC): February 2022 disgorgement. 60% Pinot Noir / 40% Chardonnay. When I opened this up earlier in the afternoon to taste it, my early impressions were neutral to positive. I found the wine to be solidly fruit-centric, meaning that was the core way the wine was showing, without the usual Emotion energy and cut. Cantaloupe, kumquat, juicy red fruit and juicy apple. Well, fruity. Then, we used the same bottle for the larger tasting over dinner. Many of us at the table had a hard time with this vintage. The wine seems to be one-noted, round but lacks balance with astringence. It's hard to think of a Vilmart Emotion showing like this but I am writing what I sensed. I have another bottle, I plan to open it when I finally get an offer on this 2015 and then I'll see what I find (we got these current bottles from Saratoga in NY). For sure, without question, the 2013 and 2014 are far outclassing the 2015 now, which at this time drinks with some disappointment.
