Super duper lovely and astonishingly youthful. This has deep Merlot fruit in a reasonably polished and somewhat exotic package. Very impressive classic Pomerol and a lot of runway to improve still.

Champagne and claret (John's place, Croton): Beautiful wine - I always love this; the balance of fruit, richness, and savoury/tertiary development here is always compelling and such a wonderful wine.

Tasted double blind from a small capped bottle as part of a zoom tasting. Deeper and more powerful than wine #1 (82 Belair). A little exotic. Very aristocratic and complex. A little VA - marzipan. Plummy and cassis fruit. Dark and spicy and more rough. Chewy tannins. Florals - violets. Gets more coarse into finish. Finish is a little volatile. Nose - 5-5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15.5-16/20.

Not quite on the level of my other (non-flawed) experiences with the '82 Magdelaine - I always find a bright herbal wintergreen-type of note in these wines, but it was prominent enough on the nose here that it felt a little distracting at times. Still, I love the sense of finesse and clarity to the red fruit, and how polished this is on the palate. Very pretty.

St. Emilion night (Chicago, IL): I think this lagged the other 1982s today, just because I'm finding myself not as enamoured of the Magdelaine style. Honestly, it drinks too much like a left-bank wine. Plenty of pencil shavings and dried figs on the nose; quite youthful and structured, but not as plush and giving with the fruit as the Canon or Figeac. Impressive for its freshness.
