Ruby-garnet in the glass. Classic nose of cassis, lead pencil, cedar. Lovely sweet fruit on the palate, with great verve and freshness, lovely balance and a long long finish. This is at its peak but not going anywhere south yet. Good for a few years yet.

The story of 97 Bordeaux is the story of the commodity that is Bordeaux. Opened en primeur at an insultingly high price and merchants were 'forced' to buy, or else - they were warned - they would not be able to buy 98s... So a lot of merchants lost a lot of money, selling off unsold en primeur stock a couple of years later to generate cash flow. Unsurprisingly people took a dim view of the wines, but many are in fact lovely, although they took many years to come good (another factor that damaged their reputation). This is a case in point - a lovely wine, completely in its prime and will last - but who has any left....? A silly story, and no credit to the Bordelais.

Still has good structure with secondary flavours. Slight earthiness with some sweetness. Don’t think can hold much longer

Great surprise. Last bottle of a case bought 20 years ago. Mellow, dark cherry, little oaky and old in a nice way.
