  • Tasted this at the Rioja - Spain's Overlooked Classic Masterclass by Tan Ying Hsien at Prowine Singapore 2024.

Dark tea in colour. Astute, sharp notes on the nose with some tea like characteristics. On the palate, there are minerals, buttery quality with a lush finish.

  • Fantastic. Glad to be somewhat affordable.

  • A fascinating bottle. The first year of a brand that has since become ubiquitous, which just so happens to be one of the top Rioja vintages of the 20th century. Uncorking this feels like unboxing a first-generation iPod. Moreover, this particular bottle supposedly spent its entire life at the winery until just a few years ago. The bottle itself is a thing of beauty- patinaed frosty glass, a tastefully tattered label, and a sense of decades gone by. The wine itself is pale garnet with a brown/yellow rim. It looks old. The nose if full of old leather, shoe polish, soy sauce, and maaaaaybe some dried cherries (if I’m being generous).

In the mouth- light in body, medium high acid, intensely earthy, mushroomy, umami. Not a hint of tannin or fruit. The complexity is high, though picking out individual flavors for a detailed tasting note feels like an exercise in masochism. On a purely aesthetic level, this wine is a dud. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not sorry I opened this. It’s a fascinating experience, and worth it just for the history. But at the end of the day, who really wants to listen to music on an old iPod?

  • Two Old Riojas (Rekondo, San Sebastian, Spain): Opened and poured without decanting. Pale tawny with browning rim. Fantastic aromas of faded red berry and cinnamon. Light, ethereal feel, but there is real sap, sweetness, and even a bit of chocolate. Amazingly fresh, vivid fruit for an almost 60 year old wine. Perfectly weighted acidity. The tannins left the house long ago. Achingly beautiful mature red wine. Until I looked back at my notes afterward, I didn’t realize that I had had this 4 years ago, also from a Spanish restaurant’s cellar. This bottle was even better.

24 hours later, more citrus, and the red fruit has attenuated, as has the texture, but sweetness and ground coffee richness are still there. OK, it’s lost a bit but is still incredibly enjoyable. All hail this iconic 1964 Faustino.

Too oxidized "in a bad way" for my liking. Oloroso gone wrong and became a biological experiment that also went wrong.

Some of the other tasters enjoyed this much more than I did.
