Still has something to give, but sufficiently past its prime so that it's more interesting as a look at how Brooks Pinot ages than something that gives much pleasure on its own. On the darker side of the Pinot spectrum, showing lots earth and tobacco, but the faded fruit is by no means entirely gone. Medium to light body.

Needed a 2 hour decant at least as the nose had a real alcohol twinge that I found unsettling at the start - after it opened up, big and rich on the palette, dark berry flavors, short finish, but nothing really distinctive as a take-away - on reflection, probably past it's prime

Dark, relatively brooding with good depth. On the nose, a nice earthy funk with a balanced sweet undercurrent. Medium to medium-heavy body. Seems to be in a very good place right now.

Nice jammy ripe red fruits typical of Oregon warmer 06 vintage. Good wine withvegigies and olives pasta with a hint of sweetness to the typical Oregon forest funk. More fruit weighted, again most likely vintage driven. Not my preferred Oregon Pinot style but nice balance of fruit, tannin, acid and herbs but the terroir and sense of place a backdrop.

(BROOKS Janus Pinot Noir) Brooks Dear Friends, This winery has received a boatload of acclaim and they deserve it with aplomb. Their standard 2006 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir was rated as Oregon's best (94pts) by Wine and Spirits and now Burghound has recognized their top bottlings with equally worthy praise. If the Marcassin and Aubert scores from yesterday have you down (I actually thought he was generous), try this instead - rationally priced and fastidiously produced in a power-packed but esoteric and nuanced style where subtlety still reigns despite the sheer determination of the wine - for the tarrif, this was one of the highest scoring wines in the entire report and it represents a return to reason by a US producer intent on delivering value at the top-end rather than retiring in one vintage by gouging the consumer with prices that are ridiculous. The philosophy of Brooks mirrors our own and I hope their mantra rubs off on those around them. From the winery: "Our approach to winemaking is simple. We seek natural balance in the vineyard and cellar, to show the true expression of terroir in our wines. We are passionate about organic and biodynamic farming; as we believe it not only creates better wines, but these important practices help keep our earth alive and ecosystem intact. While we respect the individuality of each vineyard and its sense of place, we maintain the philosophy that the greatest depth, flavors and balance in a wine are achieved by blending. Our focus is to produce beautiful Riesling and Pinot Noir, both of which are perfectly suited to grow in the cool Willamette Valley climate. Most of all... we hope you enjoy our wines with good friends and family, with wonderful cuisine!" Another reason to support this entity is the tragic death of Jimi Brooks, the proprietor, that left his eight year old son as the official owner of the winery (all of us can relate to a story such as this) - any small business in the face of tragedy, no matter how well-intentioned, needs the help of those around them and that means all of us. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for all the right reasons (certainly more than the mutual funds of the same name at present) This parcel is directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance: 2006 Brooks Winery Pinot Noir Willamette Valley "Janus" (if we run out, there was a parcel last week in NJ at even less than this but it's probably gone by now. I cannot vouch for provenance but it may be worth a shot) ...we also have a very small amount of the Brooks 100+ case reserve wine, called Rastaban.
