Another incredible showing for this wine. Mid shoulder fill. Original cork, which came out almost in one piece. Very deep hue showing very little evolution at 88 years!
So much for Merlot not aging well. Not decanted this time, but could well have benefitted from a decant. Still plenty of fruit to go with spices and earthy character.

Second bottle, slightly better fill and even more impressive. Decanted about two hours prior to serving, which was about right. Very deep hue, not totally clear; much like 1928 wines. Intense fruity, cedary, ftheorest flloor aromas make this appear younger than the 1970 Canon Fronsac which also showed well. So much for tough tannns; this is now silky smooth at 87 years of age... I'm not sure even recent vintage can compete with this?

First of 5 bottles purchased at auction. Low shoulder fill. Cork was slightly loose but came out in one piece. In many ways this wine reminds me of the 1928 Haut Brion with its opaqueness, deep color and viscosity. Decanted just prior to serving; hardly any sedimentation in the bottle. The nose is almost entirely of the earthy side along with elements more typically associated with Port. Just a hint of soy right after opening but that note disappears quickly. Still with a substantial tannin structure, this must have been a massive wine during most of its life; chewy with substantial palate weight. After an hour or so the wine starts to "dry up" and take a more astringent character. The finish is really long though largely on the earthy and tannic side. Just mindblowing textural structure to this wine. I will be interested in seeing if any of the bottles with better fill levels will hold out longer. Best enjoyed with food such as a simple London broil. Awesome experience. This wine held on and arguably improved by the following day showing amazing concentration and balance.
